Biography

Benjamin Lillard and Elizabeth Hensley were never married, as his request for a divorce was never finalized before his death. He left his wife, Frances, shortly after the Revolution, and went to live with Elizabeth. With Elizabeth he had the following children:

Mary "Polly", Nancy, Absolem, Margaret "Patsey", Rhoda, Leftage, Hedgeman, and Oliver. [1]

Posted by S. Waters - Elizabeth Hensley was referred to as the Widow Hensley. So it appears that she was married and her husband Mr. Hensley died. She had her own business as a seamstress/tailor and was reported in court records as the common-law wife of Benjamin Lillard. Her maiden name may be SEALE per two records I have seen. One is a Seale Family Bible that has Benjamin Lillard and Augustine Bradley's names and birthdates in it. And the other is a letter written by a descendant. A Seale family lived in the same area where Benjamin Lillard lived. Look at the following deeds:

1786 - Deed Book ___ Culpeper Co., VA? check records land sold by Joseph King & wife Mary to Samuel Leather refers to land adjacent to "Widow Henslee's plantation"- also adjacent land to John Seals line, John Sampson's line, near Lewis Render, to Cribble, & Dutch Glebe land witnessed by John Lillard & Benjamin Lillard

same land was later sold by Samuel Leather to _____ mentions "Widow Henslee's plantation"

Alexander Rider sold 100 acres of land to Elizabeth Hensley May 27, 1789 Witness Willis Seale, James Lillard, Benjamin Lillard

12 Nov 1791 deed Alexander Rider of Culp. & John Dear of Culp adj. James Lillard, Henry McAllister Fitzhugh & Elizabeth Hensley

Benjamin Lillard and Elizabeth has 8 children. The first was Mary who was born in 1786.
