Biography

This Patrick was son of Agnes and Patrick Hepburn. He was styled as the Younger of Hailes and the Rector of Lynntoun.

This Patrick was obviously a favoured son. He received safe conducts from Edward the Third of England in 1363 to visit the Tomb of St. Thomas of Canterbury and again in 1364 to pursue his studies at Oxford University.

In the historical literature John of Fordun styled him "Miles magnanimus et athleta bellicosus'. With his father he greatly contributed to the Scottish victory at Otterburn in 1388.[1]

He was defeated and killed at Nisbet Moor in West Nisbet, Berwickshire fighting the Percies, by the Earl of March who had turned traitor to his King and country. Hepburn, with the flower of the youth of East Lothian, fell in the battle, which took place on 22nd Jun 1402.

It is from this Patrick having had families to two wives that we see the family tree divide into the Hepburns of Hailes and the Hepburns of Waughton.

Marriages

He married firstly Beatrix de Vaux, daughter of William de Vaux, Lord Dirleton and coheiress of the family of Vaux, Lords of Dirleton. They had three sons:

Dirleton is on the Firth of Forth coast six miles north of Haddington in East Lothian. The family of Vaux maintained a castle at Dirleton.

Patrick married secondly, Dame Christian Gourlay, Lady of Waughton. Dame Christian later married Sir William Lindsay of the Byres. She was the daughter of William de Gourlay, maternal grandson of Sir William of Erth, Lord of Waughton. Patrick and Christian had two sons:

I'm afraid this is a bit of a mess. No cleric could be married with children in the 15th century. What is the absolute clear realiable source that he married Gourlay? Likewise what is the evidence of the Vaux girl's Christian name when Balfour Paul could not locate it?

The Hepburn of Hailes preceding Hepburn of Waughton is very much disputed, as far back as the 1600s.

Consider updating the death location to: Battle of Nisbet Moor, Wooler, Northumberland, England and moving the description of which side he was on to the biographical narrative?

Hepburn-92 and Hepburn-78 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same spouses, same death date
De Hepburn-2 and Hepburn-78 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same spouses, same parents, died 1402 at Nisbet Moor, same time frame, birth date after 1322, before 1376, same locations
