Biography

1776 Project
Corporal Caleb Heptinstall served with 1st Virginia Regiment (1781), Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Caleb Heptinstall is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A054021.

Caleb Heptinstall was probably born about 1762 in King George County, Virginia. His parents may have been William Heptinstall and Rebecca Bohame. However, the details of Caleb's early life, and his parents, have not been studied in sufficient detail, based on WikiTree profiles, to confirm these brief reports. Much more research needs to be done on this aspect of Caleb's life.

There are a few records confirming that Caleb "Hippenstall" was a corporal in a Virginia Regiment of Continental forces stationed at Parker's Ferry on the Edisto River in South Carolina in the spring and summer of 1782. A skirmish with British forces occurred there in August 1781, but no record is available confirming Caleb was involved. No pension papers are available either.

We do know that Caleb first appears in Franklin County in 1789. He witnessed a deed (for Thomas Demoss) in April and paid property tax there on June 15. We have no information on where he was prior to 1789. He married Lize 'Tege' Greer in 1796. Tege was underage at the time of her marriage and her guardian, Thomas Demoss, gave consent. Their marriage was apparently recorded in both Franklin and Bedford counties. Tege was the daughter of Joseph Greer and Ann Lowe. As indicated in the Children Section below, it may be likely that Caleb had a first unknown wife before he married Tege.

Census Data

The only federal census data we have are for 1810 and 1820. There are two questions about those records.

In 1810, there are 3 males under 25 present, yet we only know of two sons. One of the three might be a son-in-law, but that would be difficult to prove.

Also in 1810, we see a female >45. Tege would only have been about 33 in 1810 and there is no female in that age group recorded. Possibly, the census taker incorrectly assigned Tege's age, or the older female could be Caleb's mother, who some have reported to have lived until 1824. Also difficult to prove as only one female >45 was present in 1820 and there are no probate records known for Rebecca Bohame Heptinstall.

Residence

Caleb first began acquiring land along the Staunton River but by 1818, he bought 535 acres on Gills Creek and this appears to have been his primary residence thereafter. Both locations would have been neighboring members of the Greer family. We can only assume Caleb was farming, and he did have some slaves, who were sold in 1828.

At his death, Caleb owned about 669 acres per the 1825 allotment of dower. The lands were divided among all the children, and the total of that division equals 698 acres, pretty close to the dower allotment number. Tege's portion was 150 acres. Several of Caleb's children moved out of Franklin County and by 1835, there is a flurry of deeds in which portions of Caleb's lands were passed back and forth among the chidlren.

Children

This following list of children of Caleb Heptinstall was assembled from the will of Caleb, as well as relevant estate and land records. Most birth dates are estimates only. Specific dates are not sourced. There could be errors or omissions.

It is probably important to point out that Caleb married Lize 'Tege' Greer in 1796, some years after the estimated births of first two children listed. It's probable Caleb was married previously but that first wife is currently unknown.

  1. Thomas Heptinstall, born c. 1788; married Tabitha Hall
  2. Elizabeth Heptinstall, born c. 1792; married Banks Best
  3. William G. Heptinstall, born 14 August 1797; married Permelia Phelps
  4. Ann Heptinstall, born 4 December 1798; married Daniel S. Ferguson
  5. Julia Ann Heptinstall, born c. 1798; married Jesse Netherlands Tate
  6. Sophia Ann Heptinstall, born c. 1804; married John Parker Ferguson, moved to MO
  7. Temperance Heptinstall, born 11 July 1805; married Thomas Dudley
  8. Jeanetta Heptinstall, born c. 1809; married John Gilliam Tate
  9. Rebecca Heptinstall, born c. 1815, married Bluford Hutts
  10. Charlotte Heptinstall, born c. 1816; married Stephen Dudley

Note: Some report a son, Caleb Heptinstall. However, a son by that name is not mentioned anywhere in the will or estate records. One Caleb was seen in deed records after 1840 but he was probably a grandson.

Death

Based on the will, Caleb died sometime between writing his will 30 October 1824 and 6 December 1824. There is a relatively new tombstone memorial for several military veterans in Gretna Burial Park in Gretna, VA (Pittsylvania Co.), which includes Caleb's name. There is no evidence Caleb is actually buried there, some 30 miles east of his residence. Most likely, he is buried somewhere on the Heptinstall property along Gills Creek.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Caleb by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Caleb:

Heptinstall-3 and Heptinstall-1 appear to represent the same person because: Heptinstall-1 has no information at all but is most likely the same person as Heptinstall-3

MG, with the Clean-A-Thon we are trying to cleanup profiles with no data or no connections. Can you please enter birth and if dead a death date? If still living please click the still living button under the death date. Also if you could add a source other than a gedcom that would be wonderful.
