Halvor was born on 3 September 1817 at Kleivene under Bolvik, Solum.[1] He was the son of Johan Herman Halvorsen Kleivene and Maren Olsdatter.[1]
He was confirmed on 21 April 1833 in Solum.[2]
He married Mette Maria Nielsdatter on 26 November 1843 in Porsgrunn.[3]
In the 1865 census at Vestsida, Porsgrunn, the 49 years old Halvor Hermansen is listed as "Formand ved Støberie" (foundry supervisor) with wife and three children.[4]
