Origins

The English origins of Margaret (Gentleman) Ibrook, Susan (Gentleman) (Hunter) Hollingsworth, and Joan (Gentleman) (Herrington) Youngs have recently (December 2021) been published in The American Genealogist.[1]

Biography

Birth and Parentage

Born: By 1593, based on her marriage in 1613.
Proof of her English origins and parentage has recently been published in The American Genealogist.[2] She was the daughter of Thomas Gentleman of Southwold and his wife Christian Cock. She was named in the will of her father at which time she was unmarried and under age 18. She was also named in the will of John Cock as Joan Herrington wife Robert Herrington, along with all of her other siblings.
Previous suggestions that she was christened 5 July 1603 in Southwold, Suffolk, England, the daughter of William Jentilman and his wife Agnes. have been proven incorrect.[3]

Marriage to Harrington

On 7 March 1613 she married as her first husband Robert Herrington, born about 1595 and died in 1622. This Robert Herrington was the son of another Robert Herrington [I], who had been bailiff of Southwold for many years. [3]

Harrington had died by 1622 when, as a widow, she married her second husband. At the time of his death, their child Robert would have been about 6 years old. Weis concluded that Harrington was an orphan. "That Robert was an orphan is further emphasized by the fact that there has never been any .mention of his parents in America." [3]

1622 Marriage to John Yonges

"Robert's widow Joan married John Younges the same year, July 24, 1622. She had at least one more child by Younges and died young in England."[4]

On 23 July 1622 at Southwold Parish, County Suffolk, England, Joan married Reverand John Yonges, son of Rev. Christopher Yonges and his wife Margaret. [5][6] He was born 1598 and died 24 Feb 1672.

Joan and John were parents of at least John and Thomas, and possibly more of John's children. Probably died before 1630. [7]

Death of Joan Jentilman

Died: 5 October 1631 in Covehithe, Suffolk, England.[1]

Joan's Children by her two Husbands

  1. Robert Herrington, baptized at Southwold, County Suffolk, 1 October 1616, [3]. No records have been found of this Robert in England. It is possible that he died as an infant, even before his father. It is possible that he lived and accompanied his mother into her new marriage with Rev. John Yonges. It is possible that he grew to manhood and became the Robert Harrington who appeared in Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1644. All of these are possible -- and none of them are proved.
  2. Col. John Yonges b. b 10 Apr 1623
  3. Thomas Yonges b. 1 May 1625
  4. Rachael Yonges b. c 1627

1637 Immigration of Rev. John Yonges and Family

Rev. John Yonges and his new wife, Joan Harris finally "came to Salem, Mass., in 1637, prior to 14 Aug. of that year, bringing with them Joan's daughter by her first husband, Anne Palgrave. This Anne subsequently married Nicholas Woodbury in 1651 at Salem."[8] Joan Harris probably died before 1639. She is probably the mother of Joseph Youngs and a possible mother of Rachel and Mary.

Further, the passenger list of the ship “Mary Anne” out of Yarmouth, England bound for New England, May 1637 lists John Yonges, his wife Joan and six children. Robert Harrington, age 21 in 1637, is not listed. However there is a note added by the ship’s master: “ Yonges John 35, Minister from St Margaret's, Ipswitch, Suffolk, bound for Salem. [Sidelined: "This man was forbidden passage by the Commissioners and went not from Yarmouth."] [4] "Yonges Joan 34. This would be Joan Harris "Yonges John 14. Since Rev. John Yonges was forbidden passage, this would have been John Yonges the son, born at Southfolk April 10, 1623 to Rtev. JHohn and Joan Jentilman, and aged 14 in 1637.

Yonges Thomas. This would be [[Young-3418|Thomas Young, son of Rev. John Yonges and his first wife Joan Jentilman. He was born 1625 and would have been aged 12.
Yonges Anne. Could be a daughter of Rev. John Yonges and Joan Jentilman, if so, born 1627
Yonges Rachell. A daughter of Rev. John Yonges and Joan Jentilman, born about 1629.
Yonges Marey. Would have been born to the marriage of Rev. John Yonges and his second wife, Joan Harris, so perhaps 1632.
Yonges Josueph. Would have been born to the marriage of Rev. John Yones and his second wife, Joan Harris.

So we see that although Joan was alive and ready to come to America in 1637, she was dead when John Younges actually arrived at Southold Long Island (in the summer of 1639). I cannot find any record of which ship Younges actually sailed on. I checked all published passenger lists between 1637 and 1639. Robert Harrington II may have come over sooner, of course. He was 21 years old in 1637. However I cannot find him on any passenger list between 1630 and 1640. Many passenger ship lists have never been published.[4]

Joan Harris though living at the time the manifest was prepared, was deceased by the time the trip was actually taken, at which time Rev. John Yonges was married to his third wife, Mary, by whom he became the father of [[Youngs-119|Christopher Youngs, who was born in Southold, Long Island, New York, in 1637, shortly after their arrival.

"Rev. Younges came to America very shortly afterward and landed in Salem but soon moved to New Haven and then Long Island, New York and helped found Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island. He became the minister of the first church of Southold. Naturally it was Congregational."[4]

"Reverend John Younges emigrated to America and was an original founder of Southold, Long Island, New York. He founded the First Church (then Congregational, later Presbyterian) in Southold, Long Island, New York, where he was the minister until his death there on February 24, 1671/2, aged 74 years." [4]

Joan Jentleman's profile had apparently conflated two women of the same name.
  • Joan, baptized Southwold, Suffolk, England, 5 July 1603 to William Jentleman and Agnes. See Joan Jentleman 1603 baptism, "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975"; database (index only), FamilySearch.
  • Joan, born England, about 1595, daughter of Thomas Gentleman, married (1) Southwold, Suffolk, England, 7 March 1613, Robert Harrington, and (2) Suffolk, England, 25 Jul 1622 John (Yonges) Youngs.

This profile (Jentilman-1) was created reporting the 1603 baptism but showing a birth of 1595 in the data field. See change log for "import."

This Joan (Jentilman-1) was severed as the daughter of William in 2022. A new profile will need to be created for William and Agnes' apparent daughter, Joan, baptized 1603. The new profile is Joan Jentilman (bef.1603-).--Gene
