Susanna was born in about 1627. Her father was Sir Simon Harvey, Clerk of the Greencloth in the Royal Household, and his wife Dame Ursula Wiseman. [1] She was baptised at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster on 27 Oct 1627.[2][3]
In her early years, Susanna was drawn to the Catholic faith under the influence of Father Turbeville. [4] Although not mentioned by name, she was remembered in the 1646 will of her paternal uncle, Sir John Harvey. [5]
She married Richard Hopton on 21 May 1655 in St Andrew, Holborn, Camden, London, England.[6] He attempted to draw her back to the Church of England, her baptismal faith. She became a noted student of the great English divines such as Laud, Thomas Moreton and Chillingworth and returned to the church in about 1661. Richard and Susanna had no children.
Susanna and Richard lived most of their lives in rural Herefordshire, firstly at Gattertop and then at Kington on the Welsh border. While living at Gattertop she became acquainted with the poet Thomas Traherne, who was rector of nearby Credenhill.[1]
Her husband died in 1696 and Susanna lived on in Kington, many years a widow, and noted for her extensive charity and devotion to religious observances. She also wrote several well regarded devotional texts. [4]
Before her last illness she moved from Kington to Hereford, where she eventually died of fever on 12 July 1709 aged about 82. [4] She was buried at Bishops Frome, Herefordshire on 14 July 1709 beside her husband Richard. [7] The parish register noted that she was the relict of Richard. Floor slabs in the chancel of the church at Bishop's Frome commemorated both Susanna and her husband Richard. [8]
Not a daughter of Sir William Hervey of Ickfold, Sussex to whom she was previously connected.
