It is proposed that Peter was born around 1700-1703. When Peter, his wife and children left Neuwied late 1720's/early 1730's, they traveled down the Rhine. There route of travel would have been north by Bonn and Cologne and into the Port of Rotterdam in Holland. From there they boarded a ship to England, although the port of their destination is unknown. All ships had to stop in England before starting the long voyage to America. It is believed he arrived at the Port of New York City.
The Herzog family, whose name has been spelled countless ways including Hartsough and Hartsock, is first recorded in Bridgewater Township, Somerset County, New Jersey where they were associated with the First Reformed Church of Raritan, in Somerset County, New Jersey. A good synopsis of the records relating to Peter was done by John Hartsook and is located here. There is much confusion as to who Peter's wife was: Anna Margaretha Kuntz or Anna Margaretha Schmidt. John Hartsook suggests that Peter may have married twice: first in Germany to Anna Margaretha Schmidt and later in America to Anna Margaretha Kuntz--though there is a dispute as to whether Anna Margaretha Kuntz is the daughter of Nicholas Kuntz or Daniel.
Peter and his family moved to Frederick County, Maryland sometime before 1749. This is known from a lawsuit brought against Peter by his brother Handrick. [1] Later, Peter is found renting 100 acres from Lord Baltimore 9/29/1759.
