Biography

This profile is part of the Heskett Name Study.

"Grandma Johnson" was very loved by her family. She was an outspoken kind of gal who lived an interesting life. She is remembered as being fantastic in the kitchen. Her recipe collection is being documented and preserved on it's own page, Space:Dorathe Cooked.

(for details on where Dorathe was living while married to Harry, see Harry's profile)

Dorathe May Heskett was born January 2, 1903 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa to Charles Heskett and Arlena Brock.[1][2][3][4] They were living at 1116 2nd Street in Des Moines in 1905.[5]

Dorathe is living at home with her mother, Lena, at 1400 2nd Street in Des Moines, Iowa.[6] In 1915, the family was living at 1200 Bluff Street in Des Moines.[7] She was at school, having finished 6th grade, and is listed as a Lutheran.[7]

Dorathe was living with her mother, Lena, and stepfather, Roy, in 1920.[8] They are living at 1406 2nd Street in Des Moines.[8] Dorathe was working as a file clerk at a rubber company.[8] Considering that's where Harry was working, too, it's most likely where they met. Harry and Dorathe were married August 13, 1921 at Waukee, Dallas, Iowa.[2] Dorathe, Harry, and Pat are found in the 1925 Iowa Census on 1710 Jefferson in Des Moines.[9]

The Carpers are living at 1950 Lincoln Street in Des Moines in 1930.[10]

Dorathe and Harry were living at 1525 Ohio Street, Des Moines, Iowa, in 1940.[11]

Dorathe married second Cecil Breeden.[12]

Dorathe married third Emil Johnson. They lived most of their marriage in Vero Beach, Florida. One of Dorathe's Florida addresses was 1705 14th Avenue, Vero Beach.[13][4] Dorathe's last home was an apartment at 1001 Sunset Drive, Apartment 3, Norwalk, Iowa.[14]

Dorathe died May 31, 2001 in Norwalk, Iowa.[1] Dorathe is buried in the Norwalk Cemetery, Norwalk, Warren County, Iowa.[3] The funeral service and burial were very lovingly done, including music performed by her grandchild, David Carper and great grandchildren, Abby Brown Glann and Jennifer Kessler.[13]

A personal gem of mine came around holidays. Grandma Johnson, as I got to call her, knew I loved black olives, so she would always bring an extra can to share with me when we gathered for holiday dinners. At one such instance, she decided my backside was rather well proportioned, and admiringly, (though it certainly didn't feel that way to a young teenager!) announced it made the perfect shelf to sit a glass of lemondade on. Only if you knew her, did you know that was meant well and not a critique.

Another story has to do with when my grandmother, Patricia, Dorathe's daughter, met her future second husband, Bob. Both Pat and Dorathe were in a bar together, just relaxing for the evening when Bob came in. It is said that Bob tried to pick up Dorathe FIRST! but later left with Pat, and it is all history from there.

Much of what I, Abby, remember of her comes via stories my dad, her grandson told me, though I was lucky enough to spend some time with her myself. I remember visiting her in her apartment in Norwalk from time to time. Dad spoke of her time running a restaurant, and about her wonderful skills in the kitchen. She was a funny one even there, though, as she apparently loved the fish, carp, something that her grandchildren and great grandchildren, in whom was also instilled her love of fishing and the outdoors, usually throw back in the water.

Another instance of her ornery nature comes via stories of card games. She played cribbage and rummy, and apparently taught my dad, along with his mother-her daughter, Pat, how to cheat! He talked of how it was one hard evening to sit and play with those ladies and their friends as they were sneaky when it came to games.
