Biography

Elijah was born in either the Mifflinville or Benton area of Columbia County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer and a miller. He was buried in St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Cole's Creek (R.R. Benton), Columbia County, Pennsylvania.

Will of Elijah HESS: Letters of Administration: 28 Feb 1853; File 4, v. 3, p. 88, 1853; Columbia County Court House, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Copied and transcribed by PALE 11 June 1998. Bond No. 4:

Letters of Administration on the Estate of Elijah HESS, late of Benton Township, deceased. Be it remembered that on the twenty eighth day of February A.D. 1833 [appears to be 1833, should be 1853?] Letters of Administration in due common form of law were granted by ? G. CLARK, Register for the Probate of Wills and Granting Letters of Administration in and for said County unto Saul OGDEN, Administrator of all and singular the goods, chattels, rights and credits which were of Elijah HESS, late of Benton Township, Columbia County, deceased, widow having first renounced as follows, to wit: ``? G. CLARK, Esquire, Register, of Columbia County, the undersigned widow of Elijah HESS, deceased, late of said County hereby release her right of Administrator upon the Estate of said decedent & desire that Letters of Administration thereon be issued to Saul OGDON [edge cut off] County. Witness my hand and Seal. Margaret [her X mark] HESS Lowry McHENRY - Witness.

Said Administrator having first put in as his sureties. Wm. McHENRY and L.B. RUPERT in therefore [cut off] Eight hundred dollars and having also been first duly sworn to administer said Estate well and truly and according to law and faithfully comply with and regard the laws relative to collateral Inheritances.
