Biography

Dorothea's parentage is not at all clear. Most genealogies that list her parent's names give Ulrich Hess and Urlsula Schlatter. However her name does not appear in Ulrich's will. (It lists Ulrich HESS of Shrewsbury Twp with wife Ursula and son Henry as executors. Other children listed are eldest son Jacob; Ursula wife of John MENGES; Anna Maria wife of Michael GLADFELTER; & Michael) If she was Ulrich's daughter Urlsula would not have been her mother. We know from her tombstone that Dorothea was born in 1745. Ulrich did not arrive in Pennsylvania until 1751 and married Ursula a year later. This would mean Dorothea was born in Europe and Ulrich had a previous marriage.
