Biography

According to Dennis Aron in "Impact of the Holocaust on the Descendants of Jakob Moyses and Sara of Meudt", Hedwig's fate was unknown at the end of World War II.[1]Hedwig and Leo survived and immigrated to New York in 1941.[2]

Hedwig Hessel was born 4 Mar 1890[3] in Hambuch, Germany[2]

She and Leo Klee were married, in Germany on Oct 26. The 28 Oct 1949 issue of Aufbau announced their 1949 anniversary on that date.[4] The year was probably 1919, 10 months before the birth of their daughter Else, or perhaps 1918.

The Jewish Transmigration Bureau aided Jews in leaving Europe. They had a system whereby deposits were made, in the United States and other places, to pay for ship tickets, for Jews trying to leave. Irene Klee, of 55 Central Park West, New York City, set up a deposit account for the purpose of obtaining tickets for her parents, Leo and Hedwig Klee, who lived in Plaidt, Koblenz, Germany.[5] Her parents used this money to buy tickets.[2]

Hedwig Sara (Hessel) Klee and her husband Leo sailed from Lisbon to New York, aboard the S.S. Serpa Pinto, on June 12, 1941. The ship arrived June 23, 1941. She was age 51, a housewife, German, Hebrew, born in Hambuch Germany. She received papers 4/17/41 in Stuttgart, which was also her last permanent address. She left behind her nearest relative, Selma Siegler, of Kaisersech, Germany, her sister, and was going to Leonore Sennfeld, her husband's niece, in Forest Hill LI 111-45 76th Ave New York. Her medical exam reported she had varicose veins and obesity. She was 5'3", and fair with dark grey hair and brown eyes[2]

Leo and Hedwig petitioned to become naturalized citizens. On Dec 9, 1947, their certificates of citizenship were issued in the U.S. District Court, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Their residence at the time was 32-52 33rd st Astoria, NY[6]

Hedwig, age 78, a resident of Queens, New York, died in Jul 1968.[3]
