Moritz (in English - Maurice) was born 25 May 1572 at Kassel, the only surviving son of Wilhelm IV, Landgrave von Hessen in Kassel, and his wife Sabine, Countess of Würrtemberg.[1]
He succeeded on the death of his father in 1592, as Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (or Cassel) and inherited the region of Marburg in 1605 (confirmed by Imperial decree 1623) and acquired the administration of the Abbey of Hersfeld in 1606.[2]
He was known as 'der Gelehrte' or
First wife and family
Moritz married 23 September 1593 at Kassel, Agnes, Countess of Solms-Laubach. She was only 15; born at Laubach 7 January 1578, the fifth child and eldest daughter of Johann Georg I, Count of Solms-Laubach, and his wife Margarethe von Schönburg-Glauchau.[3]; [4]
Otto, born 24 December 1594 at Kassel, Hereditary Landgrave, who died before his father;
Elisabeth, born 24 March 1596 at Kassel, married Johann Albrecht II, Duke of Mecklenburg-Güstrow;
Child stillborn at Melsungen 24 January 1597;
Child stillborn in August 1599;
Moritz, born 14 July 1600 at Kassel, Coadjutor of Abbey of Hersfeld from 10 August 1608, died at Kassel 11 August 1612;
Wilhelm V, born 13 February 1602 at Kassel, succeeded his father as Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel.
Agnes died 23 November 1602 at Laubach and was buried there.[1]
Second wife and family
About six months after the death of Agnes, Moritz married Juliane, Countess of Nassau-Siegen, on 22 May 1603 at Dillenburg. She was born at Schloss Dillenburg, 3 September 1583, the daughter of Johann VII, Count of Nassau-Dillenburg, and his first wife, Magdalena, Countess of Waldeck.[5]
With Juliane, Moritz had a further fourteen children;[2]
Philipp, born 26 November 1604 at Kassel, died killed in action at Lutter am Barenberg 17 August 1626;
Agnes, born 13 or 14 March 1606 at Kassel, married Johann Kasimir, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau;
Hermann, born 15 August 1607 at Kassel, succeeded as Landgraf von Hessen-Rotenburg;
Juliane, born 7 October 1608 at Schloss Marburg, died 11 December 1628 at Kassel;
Sabine, born 5 July 1610 at Kassel, died there as a child, 21 May 1620;
Magdelane, born 25 August 1611 at Kasssel, married Erich Adolf, Count of Salm-Reifferscheid;
Moritz, born 13 June 1614 at Kassel, died there 16 February 1633;
Sophie, born 12 September 1615 at Kassel, married Philipp, Count of Schaumburg-Lippe;
Friedrich, born 9 May 1617 at Kassel, succeeded as Landgrave of Hesse-Eschwege and Wanfried;
Christian, born 5 February 1622 at Kassel, served in the Swedish army at Bückeburg, where he died 14 November 1640;
Ernst, born 8/18 December 1623, succeeded as Landgrave of Hesse-Rheinfels-Rotenburg;
Christine, born 9 July 1625 at Kassel, died young 25 July 1626 at Kassel;
Philipp, born 28 September 1626 at Kassel, died young 8 July 1629 at Rotenburg;
Elisabeth, born 23 October 1628 at Kassel, died young 10 February 1633 at Kassel.
Death and burial
Moritz abdicated on 17 March 1627 in favour of his eldest surviving son, Wilhelm, and went to Eschwege, where he died 15 March 1632. He was buried in St Martinskirche at Kassel.[1]
