Note
Note: It's interesting to note that in the 1880 census of Cherokee the enumerating party was a man who felt it his duty to call attention to what he felt to be shortcomings of those he enumerated by listing them in the field that was meant to be the used for the occupation of the party listed. It was brought to my attention by the fact that he had Frank Hester listed as a gambler. What struck me as I read that was that he wasn't near a river, and I thought in terms of a gambler as an occupation being that of a riverboat gambler. It seemed strange that he had that occupation to me, but upon reading further, it became obvious what was really happening with the enumeraton. One man was listed as being an idiot, although he was the head of household, and seemingly capable of caring for his family according to his income and realestate. And although I can't recall the exact wording of another, it was a word that meant the same thing as loafer. Another was listed as a drunkard... It was quite a revealing array of insults.
The Government chose to leave the notations rather than have them blacked out . And by so doing , the the author of the collection of "occupations" left a sad legacy of his own.
