Captain Joseph Hewitt, son of Benjamin Hewitt and Marie Fanning, was born probably shortly before his baptism at Stonington, Connecticut, 13 December 1696. He died at North Stonington, Connecticut, before 2 January 1787 when his will was proved.[1]
Captain Joseph Hewitt served in Major Robert Denison's company of Connecticut Militia, 10 April to 10 Dec 1755. He served again, 23 March to 11 December 1764 in Captain John Tyler's company, of Lt. Col. Israel Putnam's regiment of Connecticut troops. Subsequent records refer to him as Captain for the remainder of his life.[1]
Captain Joseph Hewitt is mentioned in several land records:[1][2]
He bought from Charles Wheeler part of a tract in Stonington that Joseph had previously sold to Thomas Wheeler, deed of 25 Jan 1748.
