John was born in County Cavan about 1839.
He married [Bowman-4230 | Esther Bowman]] during 1865[1] at the home of his, soon-to-be, father-in-law in Palmerston South. The marriage was witnessed by William Wakenshaw and Agnus McConnel. While the ceremony was conducted by John Christie, the Officiating Minister.
When John died he was intestate and Esther needed to request for Administration[2] of his estate. The documents making up this application included one where all of their surviving children resident in New Zealand were required to sign indicating their consent to permit their mother to be the Administrator.
One paragraph notes that William Bowman Hewitt and Henrietta Beaumont Hewitt are not residing in New Zealand. It was signed by James Hewitt, Elizabeth Chapman, Jane Machesney Barclay, Mary Ann Campbell, John Hewitt, Kate Moreton, Esther Bowman Hewitt, Robert Brown Hewitt and Margaret Hewitt.
