Biography
Nathaniel was born in 1820. He is the son of Rev Nathaniel Hewitt and Rebecca Hillhouse. [1]
He was born Nathaniel Augustus and he changed his name to Augustin Francis, by which he was known in the Redemptorist Order of which he was the Superior of the Paulist fathers community.
He studied at Amherst College, graduated in 1839, and entered the Theological Institute of Connecticut in 1840 and became a minister in the Congregational Church. After a short time he transferred to the Episcopal Church and was ordained deacon in 1842. He was then ordained to the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church in 1845 at Charleston, S. C.
