Jonas married Comfort Billings about 1760, with whom he had the following (known) children, paternity established by his will [2]:
Tabitha
Samuel
Amy
Jonas
Comfort
Desire
Second Marriage
After the death of Comfort, he married Temperance (Smith) Holmes, (daughter of John Smith and Temperance Holmes), the widow of ______ Holmes, about 1784. [1][3], with whom he had the following (known) children:
John Smith Hewitt, b.~1785
Jonas Hewitt, b. Aug 5, 1791
Eunice Hewitt b. Feb 16, 1793
Thomas, b. Sept 30, 1794
Benjamin (twin), b. Nov 4, 1797
Denison(twin), b. Nov 4, 1797
The identity of Temperance Smith had been somewhat of a mystery, until investigated by Arthur Booth[4], who found three key pieces of information about her:
1. Found within the records of the Connecticut State Library, within one of the 98 cemeteries within North Stonington, were the gravestone records of Jonas Hewitt and family members, who were buried on what was their property, just west of the section known as Stewart Hill.[5][4] These inscription records were found:
"Jonas Hewitt died Oct 25, 1842, ae 87"
"Temperance, wife of Jonas Hewitt, died Oct 20, 1801, aged 55 years
"John S. Hewitt died Aug 31, 1862, aged 76"
"Mary, wife of John S. Hewitt, died 21 Feb 1855, aged 67."
2. In an excerpt from Genealogy of the Descendants of William Chesebrough of Boston, Rehoboth, Mass,: "On 10 Nov 1737, Joseph Billings Jr of Preston, Conn. (son of Joseph Billings and Comfort Denison) had married Thankful Denison (daughter of William Denison and Mary Avery): their daughter Comfort, b. 24 Sept 1740, married ----- Hewitt." According to a quoted abstract of Joseph Billings' will, proved in 1797, Comfort (apparently now deceased) had at least six children, as this will named, among others, "Granddaughters Tabitha Wells, Amy Killam, Comfort Hewitt, Desire Hewitt, and grandsons Samuel Hewitt and Jonas Hewitt." [6],[4]
3.The Will of his mother in law, Temperance Treadway:
"I, Temperance Treadway of Stonington, in the county of New London, being aged and considering the time of my departure out this world is at hand, but now of sound mind and memory, do, on this 8th day of March 1791, make...to my son Joshua Smith... to my son Nehemiah Smith... to my son Roswell Smith ... to my son Charles Smith ... I give unto my son in law Jonas Hewitt and his wife Temperance Hewitt, my daughter, eight sheep and one cow and one mair and all my beds & bedding and all my household furniture. I further give to my executor Jonas Hewitt all my estate that I have heartofore not given away and all demands that I have against John Treadway and Asa Treadway that was left to my last husband James Treadway..." [4]
Third Marriage
He married 3rd Mary Palmer (?) who was previously married to _________. (have to find that again).
Death and Burial
He died in 1824, and is buried in the family cemetery, Hewitt Cemetery, in North Stonington, Connecticut. [7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jonas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jonas:
Have to wait for the other person to finish the merge so I can have every thing in one place or 30 days, since the other manager doesn't appear to be active.. Thanks.
Sharon, just so you know, I'm working on Jonas, his wife, children and some of the grandchildren all at the same time...including creating profiles on missing persons (as in they don't have a profile yet) if I can find enough information. The Jonas that is Hewitt-967 is much more complete, but when the merge is completed if both biographies can stay in there I'll be able to combine all of the notes, references, etc. together.
Hewitt-1948 and Hewitt-967 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same person. I've been researching mom and dad (mostly mom) for a few weeks now, and finding children in order to add them to parents biographies. I connected Desire to her mother, now we just need the dads to be merged.
