Eliza was baptised Marie Onésime in Lachine on August 4, 1847, and the family was still in Quebec at the time of the 1851 Canadian census. Sometime around 1852-3 the family moved to Oswego, where they are for the 1855 New York census under the family name of Hickey.
This biography focuses on her marriages to Henry and Abraham. No records have been found for either of these marriages; the circumstances are inferred from the NY state, and US federal, censuses of the period.
The 1880 US census[1] records George Hickey as head, with Susan as mother, Eliza Moshier age 32, widowed, birthplace Canada, role as Other, plus two children - Malvina age 12, and Forbey age 4, both born in NY state.
In the 1905 NY census[2] Forba Moshier is listed as nephew in the household of Mary Hickey, who is the widow of Joseph, brother of Eliza.
In the 1930 US census[3] George is listed as uncle in the household of Fred and Anne (sic) Thurston. Fred is the son of Malvina Moshier.
Henry and Eliza appear together in two censuses - the 1870 US and the 1875 NY. In 1870[4], there is a household headed by Harry Bushie, with Eliza, Melvina age 1, and George H. age 1 month. And in the 1875 NY census[5] there is a household headed by Henry Mosier, with Elizza, Milvina age 7, Clara age 1, and Susan Hickey as mother-in-law. It is interesting to note that Henry's place of birth is given as Ontario when he was actually born in Quebec. This is also the case for the Hickey family, for whom Ontario is given as birthplace in various censuses.
Combined, this strongly suggests that Eliza Moshier and Eliza Hickey are the same person.
The evidence for Henry Mosier/Moshier being Henry Bougie is covered under that profile.
The following may be suspect - Forbie Moshier is still living with Mary Hickie in the 1900 census[6]. The two sets of records were taken five days apart (June 7 and June 2, respectively); could he have been counted twice? There are similarities between the two records: birth date Oct 1877 and Oct 1879; occupation Spinner, Knitting Mill and Spiner, Woolenmill (sic).
The case for a marriage to Abraham is less obvious. In the 1892 NY census for the Third Election District of the Third Ward[7] there are Abelo Laduke age 51 from Canada, Eliza age 43 from Canada, George age 9, Freddie age 8, Melia age 6, Jenny age 4, and Edmand age 2. In the same census[8] Forbe Bougie age 15 is living with a Canadian couple in the Third Election District of the First Ward. The First and Third Wards are adjacent on the west bank of the Oswego River.
Then in the 1900 US census[9], there are Abrem Ledue age 60 from Canada and a widower, Forby age 20, George age 18, Fred age 16, Melia age 14, Jennie age 12, and Edmond age 10. Clearly the same family.
In the 1882 Oswego, New York, City Directory page 218 are Abraham and Eliza LeDuc living at 208 W. Seneca. In the 1888 edition are Abraham and Eliza Ladue, but at different addresses. Abraham is listed as householder but Eliza as running a boarding house. There is no sign of Eliza in the 1899 edition, but Abraham is still living in Oswego.
One final little mystery. In the 1865 NY census, living with Felix and Susan are Sidney and Eliza Dayfor; Sidney's birthplace is given as England and Eliza's age is consistent with this Eliza. No record for the name Dayfor has been found anywhere.
