Biography

Margaret was born in 1801. She first married Philippe M Sargeant with whom she had at least one child, Ellen Rebecca Sargeant. There is a record of a marriage between Phillip M. Sargent and Margaret Hicklin in Ralls Missouri, Jan. 13, 1822. Philippe died in 1836 and she then married Francis L. Mead of New Haven, Connecticut prior to 1845. According to the book HARD SCRABBLE TO HALLELUJAH: Legacies of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, "[Francis L.] Mead's first wife, Margaret Hicklin, had been married to Mead's employer Philippe M. Sargeant (died 1836)". Margaret is buried at Halfway Cemetery, Gray, Terrebonne Parish, LA. Findagrave.com has Margaret Hicklin, wife of Francis L. Mead, buried Halfway Cemetery, Gray, Terrebonne Parish, LA.

Margaret may have been the daughter of Captain Thomas Hicklin, b 1753, Augusta County, VA, D. November, 1804 in Franklin County, VA.; and Rebecca Graham, b. 1762, Bullpasture, Augusta VA, d. 1814, Franklin, KY. '

Research Notes

I have a DNA match with a distant cousin who has Hicklin in her names. One, Thomas Hicklin, born 1769?, died, 1829, Ralls, MO. This could be Margaret's father.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:
