Biography
Mary (Hickman) Hancock was born in Gloucestershire, England.
Mary was born in 1790, the daughter of Robert Hickman and Elizabeth Newton, and was baptised at Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire on 8 April 1790. [1]
Mary married Stephen Hancock at Chipping Campden on 14 April 1814. The marriage took place by license and with the consent of their parents. [2]
Mary and Stephen had at least six children, all of whom were baptised at Chipping Campden:
- Ann
- Elizabeth
- James
- Henry
- Susannah
- Mary
In the 1841 census, Stephen, Mary and their son Henry were living on their farm at Little Dorsington, Warwickshire. [3]

In her husband's will of 1842, Mary was named as one of the main beneficiaries. [4] By 1851, Mary was running the farm helped by four of her children; Ann, Elizabeth, Henry and Mary. [5] It was quite a big establishment as she employed nine labourers.
