Biography

Jonathan Hickman (1747-1847) was a fisherman and pilot. He was born on board a ship on the Atlantic Ocean. (Born pre-maturly on passage from England to Halifax) In 1747 Hickman's parents left England for North America. His father was killed when he fell into the hold of the ship during the voyage and the pregnant mother went into premature labour. The child, named Jonathan, was very frail and at one point was thought to have died. Preparations were made for a burial at sea, but the mother detected a slight movement in the child and stopped the burial in time. Jonathan was kept wrapped in cotton bunting for the remainder of the voyage. The ship docked at Halifax, and the family lived there for a short time until the mother secured a position as housekeeper for a British Army officer stationed at the British garrison on St. Pierre. The family left St. Pierre shortly after the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which ceded that island to France, and settled at Grand Bank.

In 1765 Hickman is reported to have served as a pilot with Captain James Cook during the time he spent surveying the south coast of Newfoundland. He is also reputed to have been Cook's pilot in the Trinity Bay area; the town of Hickman's Harbour in that bay was named after him.

Hickman was one of the founders of Methodism at Grand Bank and contributed £15 to the building of the first Methodist church in the town in 1816; that was a substantial amount at that time, demonstrating his success as a planter. He died at Grand Bank in 1847 at the age of 100 years[1][2].[3]

Marriage and Children

From the will and church records[4][1], we have records of:

  1. Jane, died in 1862, age not given, married John Symes
  2. Susannah (Susan?) (1779-1842), m. Jonathan Tibbo
  3. Jonathan (1779-1882)
  4. Thomas (1784-1857), Taught school at Fortune
  5. Eleanor, m. Benjamin Lovell
  6. James (1789-1884)
  7. Wilson (1791-1846)
  8. Ann?
  9. Elizabeth?

Care must be taken not to confuse children of Jonathan with those of his brother, John. Jonathan married Ann Snook, daughter of Morgan Snook and Ann Woolridge; John married her sister Eleanor.
