Susan Hickman was born in 1854 at Witney in Oxfordshire, the daughter of Richard Hickman and his wife Ann, born Ann Gould [1] [2] [3] [4].

In 1871 Susan was living at Cemetery Hill between Witney and Curbridge with her parents Richard and Ann and their other children. Her age was given as 16, implying a birth date in 1854 or 1855 Her birthplace was given as Witney, Oxfordshire. She was employed in a blanket factory [5].
