Biography

Preserved Hickox was born 6 Nov 1768 in Waterbury, New Haven, CT the youngest child in the family. He married Rachel Brown on 3 Oct 1786 in Waterbury. Preserved's father, Abraham Hickok , like his wife's father, was a Loyalist and both died during the Revolution. Rachel was only 16 when she married, and Preserved only 18. Birth records for two of their children, son Samuel and daughter Salla Mariah are found among Waterbury, CT Town Birth Records.

Western CT and the Hudson River Valley of NY were home to many Loyalists. Following the Revolution, some moved on to other places, one of which, Albany and the Mohawk Valley to its west were considered places friendlier to former Loyalists and their families.

By 1797 Preserved Hickok and his wife Rachel had moved to Otsego County and then on to Oneida County NY by 1799, when he is recorded there. His family is represented in the 1800 Federal Census in Whitestown, Oneida County, with appropriate tallies for Preserved, Rachel, Samuel and Salla Miriah. There are also 3 younger children. A daughter Mary, was born there in 1805. Daughter Mary was married near Utica, NY before 1830, and according to some, Preserved and Rachel later moved to Cuyahoga County, OH where Preserved's brothers Abram and Jared had settled. Neither dates nor places of death are yet known with certainty for either.
