Disputed Origins

Many online trees, and even some late 19th/early-mid 20th century genealogies, claim he was the son of one Sir Ellis Hicks (b 1315), but he could not have been, because John was born 140 years later.

In seeking the original source of the claim that John was son of Sir Ellis, we find an 1811 publication that says:

"From him [Sir Ellis Hicks] lineally descends John Hicks, of Titworth, in Goucestershire, Esq., who, dying in the 7th year of King Henry VII, left a son, Robert...."[1]

Therefore, this John was not SON of Sir Ellis Hicks (if Ellis existed at all), but a DESCENDANT of Ellis.

Biography

John Hicks was born about 1455 possibly in Fortesset, Gloucester, England.[citation needed]

He died in 1492 in Gloucester, England.[2]

Did you look at Wikipedia? It Plainly explains that Sir Ellis Hicks is is the father of John Hicks of Tortworth. Linage goes , ( James / Baptist/ Thomas/John/Ellis. And my research is that Baptist Hicks is not Sir Baptist Hicks in this line. However, Wikipedia says that John Hicks of Tortworth was the grandson of Sir Baptist Hicks.

What's the proof for the marriage to Atwood? We need to clarify that before completing the current merge proposal.
