Biography

Nathaniel Hicks was born about 1814.[1] He was the son of Jonathan Hicks and Elizabeth Wry. Nathaniel married Jemima (Jane) Sears on Mar 26, 1835.[2]

In 1851, Nathaniel & Jemima (seen as Jane) were living in Midgic, New Brunswick, with 8 children. The census shows the following:

  • Nathaniel, 35, farmer
  • Jane, 32
  • William, 12
  • Charles, 5 (unclear)
  • Jonathan, 9
  • Daniel, 2
  • Nathaniel, 2 months
  • Phoebe, 15
  • Nancy, 14
  • Sarah, 6

In 1861, Nathaniel & Jemima (written Gemima) were living in Midgic, in the household of Nathaniel's father, Jonathan, along with some of his siblings and their families. There were 11 children living with them at that time.

  • Nathaniel, 47, farmer prop.
  • Gemima, 44
  • Amelia, 26 (is this Phoebe from 1851 census?)
  • Nancy, 24
  • William, 22
  • Charles, 14
  • John, 17 (is this Jonathan?)
  • Susanna, 16 (is this Sarah?)
  • David N, 12 (is this Daniel?)
  • Nathaniel, 10
  • Martha A, 8
  • Elizabeth B, 6
  • Joseph B, 1

Nathaniel owned 150 acres of land, of which 25 acres were improved farmland. The cash value of the farm was $800, with another $30 worth of implements and machinery. He owned 2 horses, 2 milk cows, 2 working oxen, 7 other cattle, 13 sheep and 3 pigs.[3]

In 1871, William and Nancy and their families were living near Nathaniel and Jemima. The remaining children at home were:

  • Nathaniel, 54, farmer
  • Gemima, 52
  • Charles, 22, farm labourer
  • David, 20, farm labourer
  • Nathaniel, 18, farm labourer
  • Joseph, 10
  • Elizabeth, 15
  • Amos, 5
  • Anna, 3
  • Nettie Jane, 3

The three youngest children seem young to be the children of Nathan and Jemima, who would have been between 49 and 52 at the time of their birth. Could they be grandchildren?

In 1881, Nathaniel (listed as "Thaniel") and Jemima were living with son Joseph, his wife and children, along with Amos, Lucinda and Julia (daughter of Harris & Nancy Hicks):

  • Thaniel Hicks, 68, farmer
  • Jemima, 64
  • Joseph Hicks, 21, farmer
  • Kate, 22
  • Marcus, 2
  • Aaron, 10/12 (June)
  • Amos, 16, farmer's son
  • Lucinda A, 14 (is this Anna?)
  • Julia, 5

Jonathan died in 1890 in Midgic.[citation needed]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:
