Alice was born in 1856 in Felmingham, Norfolk, England and baptised there on October 19, 1856. She was the youngest of fifteen children born to Edmund Hicks and Susan Slapp.

Alice was mentioned in the 1861 census as a child of 4 living with her family at Felmingham.^[1] By the time she was 15 Alice was working as a general servant with the Beech family at Bacton, Norfolk.^[2]
