Biography

There were several William Hicks living in Autauga County, Alabama which makes positive identification of the William of this profile difficult.

William C. Hicks married:

(1) Charity Hicks of North Carolina on Dec. 18, 1822
(2) Rachel (Pearson) Hicks (b. 26 Mar 1807; SC/d. 29 Mar 1878) on Dec. 4, 1832 in Autauga Co. AL.

Autauga County Land Patents for William C. Hicks:

Patentee HICKS, WILLIAM C, Patentee MIMS, SEABORN 3/31/1826 2017 AL St Stephens 017N - 014E NE¼ 24[1]
Patentee HICKS, WILLIAM C 6/4/1833 10568 AL St Stephens 017N - 014E E½NE¼ 25 [2]
Patentee HICKS, WILLIAM C 5/15/1837 23679 AL St Stephens 017N - 014E SW¼NE¼ 25 [3]
Patentee HICKS, WILLIAM C 8/8/1837 28479 AL St Stephens 017N - 014E E½SE¼ 13 [4]

Susan Lloyd has in her notes that William C. was enumerated in the 1860 census of Montgomery County, Alabama. [5]

On verifying this, two William C. Hicks were also in the 1850 census of Montgomery County. Their ages weren't quite right for the William of this profile (one was born in 1837 and the other one in 1838) nor did their wives have the correct names. The William C. in the 1860 census of Montgomery County had a wife named Clarissa Adams[6], rather than Rachel.[7]

This is in direct conflict to the information on the Abell Hill Cemetery page that states William C. Hicks left Alabama for Texas in 1839. Another conflict is that W. C. Hicks had a deed transaction 12 April 1841 in Autauga Co., Alabama.

Autauga County, AL Deed Book C 12 April 1841 from W. C Hicks to Avera and Hauser.[8]

Abell Hill Cemetery page excerpt:

"William C. Hicks Family came from Autauga County, Alabama in 1839 to the northern division of Liberty County, Republic of Texas. On Sept. 5, 1840 Mr. Hicks purchased 2,214 acres on Long King Creek from Moses Choate for $2,777.50 and 1,107 acres from John D. Burks. The deeds were put on record in Liberty County and in 1846 when Polk County was created it became the first deed on record, Deed Book "A", #1. This property was bordered on the south by land owned by Moses Choate and on the north by land owned by Barnet Hardin, father of John Wesley Hardin, gunfighter. The Hicks, Kales, and Hardin families lived near each other. "[9]

William is buried at Abell Hill Cemetery, Liberty County, Texas.

The Libert/Polk County, Texas William Charles appears to be the more likely candidate for this profile so his birth and death dates and places are used for this profile.

Rachel was enumerated in the 1860 census of Polk County, Texas.[10]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
