Biography

James Butler Hicks was born in about December 1815, in North Carolina.[1] He was the son of George Hicks and Elizabeth Randall, who migrated from North Carolina to Owen County, Indiana in about 1830.

On November 23,1831, James married Sarah Beaman in Owen County, Indiana.[2] He appears as the head of a household with four children in Owen County, Indiana, in 1840.[3] He and Sarah appear with eight children in Owen County in 1850.[4]

In about 1852, this family migrated from Owen County, Indiana, to Warren County, Iowa, where their youngest daughter Mary was born in about 1853.[1] [5] In about 1856, his wife Sarah died in Warren County.[6]

On August 10, 1856, James married Ruth Ann Lee née Hale in Marion County, Iowa.[7] This family appears in Warren County, Iowa, in 1860,[1] in 1870,[8] in 1880,[9] and in 1885.[10]

James Butler Hicks died in Warren County on April 5, 1891.[11]

DNA

Although not triangulated, the connection between James Butler Hicks and parents George and Elizabeth is supported by an AncestryDNA match between James Walter Smith, a 3GGson of James, and Mark McClain, a descendant of sibling Terry Hicks.

Research Notes

Although his gravestone indicates a DOB of Dec 1814, early census and other documents indicate birth in 1815 or 1816. The later DOB is is consistent with August 1814 birth date of older sister Terry Hicks, which is supported by DNA evidence as described above.
