He entered the Revolutionary Army and was a member of the North Carolina Militia. He saw service in the battle of Guilford. General Green placed troops in the front line during this battle resulting in a overwhelming defeat by the British soldiers. All of the American soldiers fled, except for Hicks, who stayed and stood his ground, fighting single handed with his enemy.[1]
