Biography

Richard Higdon married Jane, daughter of Henry Brookes, prior to 7 June 1662, when Henry granted a deed of gift of 100 acres on the Potomac to Jane Higden. Also on that date, he appointed Richard Higden to act as his attorney in other land transfers involving the extended Brookes family.[1]

William Vaughan vs. daniel Higdon,Charles City Court 1678.[2]

In the will of Thomas Langford, brother-in-law of Jane Higdon, Thomas mentions "John Higdon son of Richard Higdon late deceased." This will was signed 11 March 1668/9. Therefore, Richard was dead prior to this date.[3]

Richard Higdon was born about 1640. He married Jane Brooke, daughter of Henry Brooke and Jane, sometime before June 1662. [4] He died before 11 Mar 1668/9 in Westmoreland, Virginia, as evidenced by the will of Thomas Langford, his wife's brother-in-law. [5]

From Wills of Westmoreland County, Virginia by A. B. Fothergill CAMPBELL, James - 20 November 1702; 30 December 1702. To John Higdon's sons, Original, Daniel and John one heifer each; to Nathaniel Pope's two children Mary and William late of Richmond county when 21 years of age two cows and calves; to Elizabeth Higgins' two sons 5 shillings each; to Mary Triplett 10 shillings; to Original Roe 2 years schooling; wife Jane exx. and estate not willed.

HIGDON, John - 7 Sept. 1718; 21 Oct. 1718. Sons Daniel and John land, 1 negro and personal property; son John exr. {Note: This would be John Higdon I, son of Richard Higdon, corroborated by the will of James Campbell

HIGDON, John - 28 April 1720; 29 June 1720. Son John; bro. Daniel; wife Magdalene exx; son and wife equal parts of estate. {Note: Numbering for the sake of clarity. This would be John Higdon II, son of John Higdon I, as evidenced by John I's death in 1718, and the reference to brother Daniel. Also corroborated by mention of John I & II in will of Jane Campbell, below.}

MASON, John - 16 Jan. 1725; 23 Feb. 1725. Capt. Augustine Washington and William Brown.{Note: This would likely be a John Higdon III, son of John II as evidenced by the will of John II above. By the fact that he was living at the time of his father's death, and is under 20 by John Mason's will, we can infer his birth between 1706 and 1720. Since he is not mentioned in the will of John I, it is possible he wasn't born until after 1718.}

HIGDON, Daniel - 26 Oct. 1739; 27 Nov. 1739. Lands to my daus. Mary and Jane; son in law John Muse; wife Margaret; Humphrey Pope that married my dau. in law Sarah; John McLarran my clothes. {Note: This likely refers to Daniel, son of John I}

Research Notes

Colonial Higdons and Some of Their Descendants is written by Lucille B. Coone. A copy of this book is on Reserve at Western Carolina University. According to Mrs. Coone, three Higdons, John, Richard, and Daniel appeared on the records of Virginia and Maryland in the middle of the seventeenth century. This 167-page spiral bound book provides the descendants of Richard, John, and Daniel Higdon a boost towards finding their ancestors and gives the reader a wonderful glimpse of life in colonial America

Based on a book on the Julihn family ("Julihn genealogy" by Julihn, C. E. & Ryder, Isabel; 1978) which includes the contents of a key Higdon bible, plus other evidence, I believe the family is as follows (note Mary Ann Pickering is most of the way down in generation 7):

Higdon-5268 and Higdon-154 are not ready to be merged because: This is a potential match, however, the descendants of the two individuals don't match, so there are errors that should be cleared up before the merger is made. Either these are two separate individuals, or one or the other has incorrect descendants. A merger at this time would make clarifying this difficult if not impossible.
