Biography

D.J. “Doc” Higdon bio

Doc was one of many children born to James Terrill Higdon and Ada Ivey Higdon. Doc was born 8 Jul 1856. He never married but he liked children and made a strong positive impression on all his nieces and nephews. Marietta Higdon, the oldest daughter of James Jackson Higdon and Mary Alice Stokes Higdon gave this account of D.J. Higdon; Doc enjoyed drinking and he would drink too much. When he would become drunk, he would stay in the woods and not come home and allow anyone to see him in that condition.

Doc was an accomplished wood furniture maker. Often the chairs he built would have laced cane bottoms. When his brother’s nephew’s daughter, Marietta Higdon had her only child Effie Mae Kirksey, Doc built her a tiny child’s rocking chair. That chair was built about 1912. It has provided comfort and service to many of Doc’s nieces and nephews for now more than one hundred years. The rockers are now worn away from so much use but it remains in the family.

On 30 June 2012 the chair was photographed with Braylen Jackson using it. Braylen is Doc’s 5th great grandnephews, born 154-years after Doc. We should wish that Doc knew he had built such an enduring and endearing gift. Among his skills, Doc raised domestic rabbits.

On 5 November 1932 Doc passed away at age 76. He is buried at Arkadelphia Cemetery in Loree, Conecuh County Alabama near the site of his parent’s home. Doc has been gone for a long time, but is fondly remembered today.
