Notwithstanding a historical marker identifying David R. Mitchell's wife as Mary Higgins, the weight of the evidence seems to be that he was married to Lucy Higgins. [1] A Mary Higgins--presumably, Lucy's sister--married Thomas McCracken. [2] In 1850 two of David and Lucy's children, Elizabeth and Margaret, are enumerated on the federal census in the Yalobusha County, Mississippi household of Thomas and Mary McCracken. [3] Lucy is understood to have died about 1842. [4]
Research notes
Though some genealogies identify her as Lucinda, the only known record--her marriage record--indicates "Lucy L. Higgins."
