A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that Martha was the daughter of Griffen Higgs and Sarah Payne. Lacking documentation to support these origins, they have been detached. Please use G2G to discuss evidence for her origins. Thank you.
Thomas Wilder Sr. m. Martha Wilder, b. England, d. 20 Apr 1652, Hingham, MA. Thomas died 1634, Shiplake, England. Shiplake is on the west bank of the Thames, 3 miles from Henley, Oxfordshire. After Thomas's death, Martha is thought to have sent 3 of her children to America with friends. Then in the spring of 1638, she and daughter Mary sailed from Southampton on the "Confidence." The passenger list shows "Martha Wilder, Shiplocke, Oxfordshire, Spinster and Mary Wilder, her daughter." They arrived at Hingham in Nov 1638 and Martha had grants of lots in this town for house planting, pasture and meadow. Martha: Some sources, unproven, state that Thomas and Martha had children in the following order: Alice, John, Edward, Elizabeth, Mary, Isaac, Matthew and Abraham. If so, the fate and descendants of the added members is unknown.
It is estimated that her birth was 1585, 1590 ish in Shiplake, Oxfordshire, England. Shiplake comes from the ship's manifest.
Thomas Wilder and Martha Higgs Jan 1619 in Shiplock.[citation needed]
1638 on the ship "Confidence" Martha Wilder, spinster, and her daughter, Mary, residents of Shiplocke, Oxfordshire. No ages were given. [1]
Martha Wilder was granted a five acre house lot in Hingham in 1638. She was granted other lots later.[2]
Martha Wilder died 20 Apr 1652 in Hingham, Mass.[2] Martha was buried there on 1 May 1652. [3]
The earliest Wilder genealogist, Rev. Moses Hale Wilder, asserted that Thomas Wilder (abt.1618-1667) of Charlestown/Lancaster was also a son who had previously migrated to New England.[4] But see Donald F. Hansen and Michael F. Hansen, "DNA Solves A Wilder Ancestral Enigma," in American Ancestors Magazine, (2010), Vol 11, No 2, pages 46-48.NEHGS link. Conclusion from DNA testing Thomas of Charlestown/Lancaster was not the brother of Edward, nor was Thomas son of Martha of Hingham.
