Biography

Susannah was also known as Hannah and was born around 1833. She is the daughter of Samuel Higgs and Martha Unknown.

Susannah, her parents Samuel and Martha, and her brother Samuel emigrated to New Zealand on the Bolton. Susannah was listed as Hannah and aged 8.^[1]

She married in 1851 at Richmond, Nelson to William Cate.^[2] They had 5 children - Henry, Eliza, Samuel, Susannah Ann and Martha.

It's likely that Susannah left New Zealand for Australia possibly with her lover and later second husband Robert Tilt in the early 1860's prior to William's death in 1870.

William's will left his estate to the eldest children, Eliza and Samuel, In the event they become deceased, his younger daughter Susannah Ann is to inherit followed by Martha.

Susannah settled in Tasmania, Australia and remarried on 30 October 1877 to Robert George Tilt, previously of Nelson, NZ.

Prior to her marriage to Robert, they had two daughters - Susannah in 1867, Charlotte in 1870 and a son Robert Joseph in 1874.

Susanna died in 1911 in Tasmania, aged 78 and is buried at Kingston, St Clements cemetery
