Biography

Wednesday 26 March 1890 A Remarkable Occurrence A MEDICAL MAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL The little township of Dungog was thrown into a state of considerable excitement during the latter part of last week by the information that Dr Charles Pearson Higgs, an old and well known resident, was to be brought up at the local police court upon a charge of having contributed to the death of an oldman named Maurer, who had been suffering from a broken leg. The case came on onFriday last and was not concluded till the following day. Mr G P Smith, P M and Messrs Mackay, Irwin, Abbott and Rabey,J P, occupied the bench on Friday but on the following day, Mr Smith did not appear. The court was crowded throughout the hearing of the case and a very great amount of interest was manifested in the proceedings. Inspector Brennan, of Newcastle, conducted the prosecution and Mr B W Thompsonappeared for the defence. The accused was charged — "For that he, upon the 7th February, 1890, at Dungog, did undertake the treatment of one Philip Maurer, who was then suffering from a fracture of the left leg and attended to the same Philip Maurer on several occasions from the 7th to the 14th of the said month and that he, by his unskilful treatment and criminal negligence of the said Philip Maurer, feloniously caused the death of the said Philip Maurer." Several witnesses, in addition to those heard at the inquest, were examined and Messrs Mackay, Irwin and Robey strongly supported a conviction. The accused was accordingly committed for trial to the next Maitland Circuit Court. Bail was granted, self in £80 and two sureties of £40 each. It will, perhaps, beinteresting to mention that it is alleged the accused is not a qualified medical practitioner but that his name appears on an unregistered list, which has recently been published, as "Dr C P Higgs, M R C S, L A C I M, S D, GovernmentVaccinator for Dungog, etc." He has been practising in the district for the last 26years, so that the proceedings have created a great stir.

  • A fatal accident occurred here yesterday afternoon. Doctor Higgs, of Clarence Town, was mounting his horse in front of Sheridan's public house, when he over-balanced himself and fell on his head, fracturing the skull. Two doctors were quickly in attendance, but he never regained consciousness, and died about midnight.
