Biography

Bahamas Project
Joseph Higgs is part of a Bahamian family.

Joseph Higgs was likely born in Harbour Island, Bahamas in 1797 to Jeremiah Higgs and Henrietta Curry Higgs. [An auction of Joseph Higgs' land in 1881, per the instructions in his 1876 will, included land in Eleuthera that was granted by the Crown to his family and inherited, in part, by Joseph: a grant to Jeremiah Higgs (1803), a grant to Samuel Higgs (1789), and a grant to Henrietta Curry Higgs (1822).]

Joseph Higgs married Amelia Ann Albury, daughter of John Albury, 24 December 1818 in Harbour Island, Bahamas. The couple had children - including Amelia Ann Higgs, Jeremiah Samuel Johnson Higgs, Robert Thomas Higgs, Mary Ann Parsons Higgs, Vincent Higgs, and Samuel Johnson Higgs.

Joseph served as a Captain of the Harbour Island Militia - as noted in the 1831 Bahama Almanac.

Joseph Higgs died in Harbour Island, Bahamas 5 April 1880 at 82 years of age. His will was probated 25 June 1880.

Research Notes

In 1868 a Joseph Higgs of Harbour Island was listed to have owned an 11-tonne vessel named Olive Branch. This ship was presumed to be a sailing ship, as opposed to a steam ship. More research is needed to confirm that the owner of the Olive Branch is the same man as the one described in this profile.
