Biography

Annie Hill was the youngest child and daughter of Rev. Preston Hay Hill and Minerva Anne Yewell[1]. She was born Feb. 9, 1879 in Russellville, Ohio Co., Kentucky. Her older siblings were Maggie Wilson Hill, Jennie Hay Hill, and William Wade Hill. In the 1880 Census, Annie is shown as 1 year old, Maggie, Jane, and William are listed, and Preston is listed as a farmer. He has one paid laborer living with them, George Gervin.[2] The Genealogy of the Hill Family, Kentucky and Virginia relates that Annie's father "practiced and preached the gospel, taught school, and was a farmer."[3]

This was 15 years after the Civil War, but many places in Kentucky continued violent uprisings. After the war, the Ku Klux Klan had numerous chapters/insurgent groups in Kentucky, as some people sought to re-establish white supremacy by intimidation and violence against freedmen and free blacks. There continued to be many incidents of shooting, lynching, and whipping of blacks by whites. [4] Preston Hay Hill had many disagreements with his wife's family, Albert G and Minerva Yewell, who had been slave holders. Preston Hay Hill was against slavery and a Northern sympathizer and the Yewells resented his sympathies.[5]

In 1880, Preston moved his family to Benton, Arkansas, later to Malvern, Texarkana, and back to Wilton, Arkansas where Annie grew up. He continued to preach, teach school, and farm. Tragedy struck in 1894 when Annie's older brother, Willie, died after a brief illness. Rev. Preston Hill conducted the memorial service for William Wade, and he was the first person buried at the cemetery of the Wilton First Baptist Church.[5]

In the mid to later-1890s, Annie and her family moved to Texarkana, Arkansas. Her older sister Maggie had married and lived there. It was there that Annie met her husband to be, Louis Preston McChesney. They married on April 18, 1899.[6]

To this marriage eight (8) children were born:

  1. Lois McChesney 1900–1980
  2. Louis Preston Jr. McChesney 1902–1903
  3. Mary Alice "Marion" McChesney 1904–1987
