Biography
Ernest Harold Hills always known as Ernie, was born in Barking, Greater London, England on May 13,1917.[1] He was the child of Harry Hills and Sue Reeves. He was named after his cousin Ernie who was killed in the First World War. Ernie went to St. Margaret's school and then passed the examination to attend the Central School. Like the rest of the family he sometimes worked in the family shop in 61 North Street, Barking, which was also his home until his marriage.
Ernie & Daphne's Wedding
On July 12, 1942 Ernie married Daphne Acton at Romford.[2] They had one daughter.
Ernie was in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in WWII and was involved in the D Day Invasion.
Ernie and Daphne ran a Travel Agents Shop opposite Barking Station. For some years they lived above the shop. Their work facilitated holidays abroad in the days when these were fairly rare. They moved to a house of their own in Romford and later retired to Norfolk, settling in Wroxham. Ernie died on October 24, 2002.[3] He was cremated at St. Faith's Crematoriam, Norfolk on November 5, 2002.
