Margaret Ann Hills was born at King Street, Battersea, London, England, on September 11, 1861[1] and baptised at St. Mary's Battersea on September 29, 1861.[2] Margaret (known as Maggie) was the daughter of Samuel Hills and is believed to be the daughter of his wife, Frances Brown, Margaret's birth certificate (see in images) gives Mary Brown as her mother and because Frances had as sister Mary, it was thought by some that Margaret was the daughter of Frances sister Mary Brown. Both the birth certificate and the baptism record give her mother's name as Mary Hills, 'formerly Brown'.
St. Mary's, Battersea where Margaret Ann was baptised
However, Mary Brown is listed with her family in Norfolk the 1861 census. She is a 13 year old ag. lab. so it seems highly unlikely that she was Margaret's mother. Both Frances and her eldest daughter Elizabeth are absent from the 1861 Norfolk census, but Elizabeth is listed with her father Samuel in the 1861 census for Battersea, her mother is listed as Mary Hills aged 20, the correct age for Frances, which suggests that while the family were living in Battersea Frances used the name Mary. [3]
On the 1871 census Margaret Ann is listed as the child of Samuel and Frances.[4]
Maggie married John Edward Beall at Tilney cum Islington, Norfolk, England on January 31, 1881 and their marriage was registered at Wisbeach.[5]
In the 1881 Census Margaret and her husband are listed as a separate household living with, or perhaps staying with, Margaret's family in Norfolk.[6]
They had five children, one of whom was born in Canada where they emigrated in 1889.[7] It appears they did not stay in Canada long as as the next child was born in Yorkshire, England in 1895.
Maggie died from tuberculosis at the age of 35 when her family was still young. She died in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, England on September 1, 1897.[8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Maggie by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Maggie:
Some of the family thought that Frances sister Mary was the mother of Margaret, but after further research we believe this is not the case as Mary is listed as a 13 year old Ag. Lab. living with her family in Norfolk, in the 1861 census. I have changed the mother to Frances, as we know she was brought up as Frances child. The mystery remains as to why her mother's name was recorded as Mary.
