Baronial Family of Hilton in Durham
The connection with the baronial family of Hilton in Durham is bogus... at least in regards to this generation. The legend goes that the last baron Hilton of Durham had died a bachelor and his two brothers, William and Edward, had emigrated and the estate was in Chancery.
About 1885 Nathan Hilton of Yarmouth, NS collected funds and hired a woman in London to research this. In order to connect the Durham family with the two brothers in London and America she must have invented probate records of two estates "Ralph Hilton, 1602" and "Roger Hilton, 1619".
Searches by Col. Banks and Mr. Hassam as well as a professional genealogist hired by Banks failed to find any traces of "Ralph" or "Roger". They did, however, find records supporting the origin of the brothers in Northwich, Chester.
As always in this business... Caveat Emptor!
Hultons of Lancashire
As far as erroneous connections with the baronial line of the Hiltons, it's important to note that the Hultons (Hilton) of Lancashire (and therefore Cheshire due to Medieval property rights of Adam de Hulton),[9] are not related to each other but did discuss intermarriage in the 1700s during the reign of George I.
The Hultons of Lancashire are a Welsh family that relocated to Lancashire in 1167. Their patriarch is Bleythin de Hulton.[10]
Marriage
PlymouthAncestors.org does not claim to know the identity of Hilton's wife, but do state that he is the father of William Hilton (b. c. 1591 - d. btw 28 Jun 1655/30 Jun 1656).
Banks & Gowen (1935), concur that Hilton's wife is UNKNOWN, but explain that the surname of Mainwaring, "was perpetuated in the family of William, Jr., for several generations."[11]
Enduring Mystery of Rebecca Hilton
Numerous genealogists and historians have named the wife of Thomas Roberts Sr. (abt.1600-aft.1673) as Rebecca (Hilton) Roberts (1602-bef.1673) and claim that she is the sister of Edward Hilton (1596-bef.1671). No evidence has been uncovered to support the contention that she in fact a member of this Hilton family, or a Hilton at all. Nonetheless we make note here in the hope that future genealogists and historians may uncover such evidence. Please see the profile of Rebecca (Hilton) Roberts for further discussion.
Tracing the Fantasy of "Mark Roger Hilton"
According to PlymouthAncestors.org, the father of the New England immigrants William and Edward Hilton was a man named, William Hilton of Northwich, Cheshire.[12] He was not "Mark Roger Hilton" as seen on Findagrave (as well as some FamilySearch pedigree resource files, other websites and blogs), as a man from Biddick, DUR ... which conflates him with William Hilton, esq. of Biddick, who married Margaret Metcalfe. Mark Roger has also been erroneously called the husband of Sybil Lumley, making him a fantasy father of William Hilton, esq. of Biddick.[13]
It appears that Mark Roger is a twist on the bogus Roger, invented in the late 19th century, as noted above.

I have already marked up Elizabeth and Amy due to lack of sources, uncertain existence, uncertain family.
I, for one, have no intention of attempting to connect them any further back. There is no new evidence.
If they had been connected to the Durham Hilton’s who are armigerous they would no doubt have been included in a visitation record and I haven’t found one. Lois Tilton and I have been working on Charles Hilton and trying to establish whether his son Edward is the Fishmonger emigrant and whether he had a brother William. Brother however is a loose term at that time, they may have been related in some way but it may just be someone assumed they were brothers.

They did have a son named Roger, but he appears to have died without issue and possibly unmarried. Please provide appropriate sources for this profile or disconnect him from his parents.
The Mainwarings were in Cheshire.
The name of "Mainwaring Hilton", grandson of this Wm. Hulton, is a merging of two surnames of the Hulton & Mainwaring families of co. Lancashire & Cheshire.

The son of Wm. of Biddick and Metcalfe is well documented. He was Sir William Hilton, whose wife Anne York, was granted adminstration of his estate on 02 Oct 1600.
