Biography

Flag of County Durham (adopted 2013)
William Hilton was born in County Durham, England.

Sir William Hilton of Hilton (bur. 09 Sep 1600 Hilton Chapel),[1] was the s. & h. of :[2]

  • William Hilton, esq. of Biddick, Durham (b. abt. 1508 - d. abt. 1562), second son of Sir William & Sybil Lumley,[2]
  • and Margaret (b. 1508/16 - d. aft. 04 Jun 1566; bur. Washington), dau. of Sir James Metcalfe of Nappa, Yorkshire.[2][3]

Dugdale (1899), calls him, "Sir William Hilton." He may have been knighted in 1570 at Carlisle by Thomas Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex.

Marriage

According to Cokayne (1929), William married Anne Yorke shortly after 21 February 1558.[1][4] Flower (1881), shows the couple already had four children by 1564, while Dugdale (1899), states that the marriage occurred in 1556/7. This suggests they were born around c. 1540. But based on the vital dates of Sir William's parents, his birth is probably closer to c. 1520.

m. (shortly aft. 21 Feb 1558) Anne Yorke, dau. of Sir John Yorke,[5] Sheriff of London and Anne, dau. of Robert Smyth of London.[1]

children

  • 1. Thomas, esq. (b. bef. 1563 - dvp. 1598).[2][6]
m. Anne Bowes, dau. of Jane Talbot and George Bowes
  • 2. Cpt. Henry "Harry". (b. bef. 1564; will dated: 31 May 1630).[2][7]
  • 3. Siraik or Syrach (bp. 20 Nov 1576 - dsp).
  • Katherine. (b. bef. 1564).[2]
m.1 Reginald Whitfield of Whitfield
m.2 Arthur Hallywell, gent.
  • Anne. (b. bef. 1564).[2]

Residence

  • Newcastle property seems to be where he lived most of the time.[4]

Events

  • 1569: rebellion of earls - provided Queen Elizabeth I with 100 horse.

Death

William was predeceased by his eldest son Thomas, so he was succeeded by his grandson, Henry Hilton, esq. (b after 1583 - d. 30 Mar 1641), who had livery of William's estate on 30 Mar 1607/8.

I'm thinking he was probably born in Durham since his father William Hilton of Biddic, Durham, never really had control of the Hilton estate, being that he succeeded bros. Thomas (d. Mar 1559), then died soon after (inv.1562), leaving Margaret Metcalfe widowed before she wrote her will in 1566.

But that's just guess ... it's possible that Metcalfe had him around her parents' house in Nappa, Yorkshire ... or maybe another family property. Need to find a record for baptism to be relatively sure...

Hilton of Hilton has *NO RELATION* to the Hiltons (Hultons) of Lancashire ... *UNTIL* the reign of George I ... when a possible marriage deal is made.[1]

Looks like Sir Wm. of Hilton had 2 other sons:[2]

  • Siraik (bp. 20 Nov 1576)
  • Richard (bp. 13 Apr 1578 Newcastle-upon-Tyne)

Note that the bp. dates are AFTER the Visitation of Yorkshire, but Thomas, son of William, was born before that time.

Hilton-1264 and Hilton-192 appear to represent the same person because: Birth places different, dates match, same mothers, same death date and place. Sure these are meant to be the same person. Small differences such as these can be resolved (birth place and name Mark) or even mentioned in the biography as uncertain. No need to postpone a merge just because of these small differences. These two can be merged and cleaned up. Please provide sources for all facts, as references clear up questions and allow for collaboration, puts everyone "on the same page" so to speak.  : )

There is no printed proof that they were married. Nor that they are related to Rebecca, William or Edward.

Someone needs to show some real proof. The name gets longer every 10 years.
