Biography

Cross of St George
Jane (Hilton) Forster was born in England.

While we do not know the name of Thomas Forster's wife,[1] she's commonly called, "Jane."[2] Some Forster pedigrees like Bateson (1893) and Foster (1871), identify her as the sister of the blind baron Hilton, while Collins (1720), simply states her father was baron Hilton, without identifying him in any way. To add to the confusion, Flower (1881), does not list her among the children of William Hilton (b. bef. 1408 or bef. 1418 - d. 13 Oct 1457).

Bateson, 1893

Note that the blind baron cannot be a "Sir William Hilton," who alledgedly died in 1560, as asserted by Jolliffee (1892),[7][8] because no such person existed. The baron who died around that time was Thomas Hilton (b. abt. 1508 - d.s.p Mar 1559), who was briefly succeeded by his younger brother William, esq. of Biddick (b. abt. 1508 - d. 1562). Neither of them had a sister or daughter who married a Thomas Forster. But more importantly, they would be about the age of Jane's grandchildren.

Flower, 1881

The only sure-fire dating we have is for a few of Jane's children. Her son Thomas (b. c. 1465/6 - d. 1527) left a will and we know that he died shortly after 1526. His wife Dorothy Ogle (b. c. 1488), was the daughter of Ralph, 3rd Baron Ogle (b. abt. 1468 - d. Jan 1513) and Margaret Gascoigne. Her parents were married some time before 1489. Foster (1871), also stated that her son Robert, founder of the Forsters at Cold Hesledon, was alive during the reign of Henry VII (1485 - 1509).

As such, she was probably the sister of Sir William Hilton (b. c. 1451 - d. bef. 31 May 1506), who married Margery Bowes (b. c. 1465). If so, it would make Jane the daughter of William Hilton (b. ante 1418 - d.13 Oct 1457; bur. Hilton Chapel) and [Mariotta or Joan?], dau. of William Stapleton (b. c. 1388 - d. 26 Aug 1458) ... and show that she was born some time after they married on 20 January 1439.

  • Father: William Hilton (b. bef. 1408 or bef. 1418 - d.13 Oct 1457).[1][3]
  • Mother: [--Mariotta or Joan?--], dau. of William Stapleton (d. 1458).[4]
  • Marriage: 20 Jan 1439.[4]
