Maurice Hines was an American musician. He was the father of famous dancers Gregory and Maurice Hines Jr.
Maurice Robert Hines never knew his father. His mother, Ora Hines, danced at the Cotton Club in Harlem in the 1920s. He met his future wife Alma Iola Lawless, through her brother with whom he served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Alma was the mother of their two sons, Maurice Jr. and Gregory. She died in 2000. He remarried. [1]
Maurice "had been a salesman for White Rock soda when he taught himself to play the drums"[2] In the 50's his sons had performed as The Hines Kids. When they decided to expand their act they asked their father to join the group.[2] He was a drummer with the act "Hines, Hines & Dad" that performed for 10 years and helped "propel his tap-dancing sons to fame", after which attended maitre d’ school and ran the gourmet room at the Thunderbird Hotel in Las Vegas.[2]
He is known for his work as an actor in Away We Go (1967), and Bleeding Hearts (1994). When both of his son were featured in The Cotton Club (1984), He served as a consultant, and brought his mother, Ora, to the set.[3]
