Biography

John HINES. [1]

Cross of St George
John Hines was born in England.

John was born in Wraxall, Somerset, England in abt 1820 being christened on 9th July 1820. His parents John and Hannah (Anna) HINES.

John married Susannah CHESTER on 11 August 1839 at St John the Baptists Church, in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. Both John and Susanna were both single at the time of their marriage. When his daughter Mary Ann was born in 1840 Susannah lists her husbands occupation as servant.

In 1841 his wife and daughter are living in Wraxall with his parents, no record can be found for him in the 1841 census. By 1851 he is living on the mine side of Nailsea, Somerset, England, his occupation listed as a letter carrier, with his wife and three children Mary, James and Thomas. Some researchers have suggested that he may have been a Royal Mail carrier.

John died on 31 January 1852 from kidney disease which had had for ten years. The informant and present at death was Elizabeth Blake, neighbour.

Family Stories

It has been suggested that John was the brother of a Dr Hines, an eminent physician in Hindmarsh Street Adelaide. It was said that he was married to a French actress, believed to have come to Australia with his daughter Mary Anne Hines, but not his wife. Research has found that Mary Ann travelled to Australia in 1859, after her fathers death. No passenger lists appear to exist for the voyage of the 'North' so it is difficult to know whether or not she came with another relative.
