Mary Hird's mother Betsey Sheret died in January 1857 at Whites Place. Mary Hird was widowed in 1860.
1861 census Living at 2 Whytes Place, Montrose Mary Elder, head, age 31, born Forfarshire, Montrose William H. Elder, son, age 9, born Montrose, scholar William Hird, lodger, age 54, born Dunnichen, house carpenter
Mary died on July 27, 1862 at St. Peters Place, Montrose, Angus. Cause of death was certified by David Johnston M.D. as pulmonary consumption for 2 years (pulmonary tuberculosis) The informant was her father William Hird whose brother James was the undertaker.
