Hannah Hitchcock was the 3rd daughter of James Hitchcock and Maria Mountford. She was born in Ontario. (The other siblings were born in England). Birth records for Ontario only begin in 1869, but in the 1901 census Hannah gave her date of birth as 29th July.
In 1868, Hannah had an illegitimate son Edward. After Hannah married John Mills in 1875 Edward went to live with his Aunt Eliza and remained in Markham all his life. He is shown as a teacher in the 1901 census. Hannah and John had four children; Albert, Annie, Mary Maria and Susan. Hannah Mills was said to have been a school teacher at Manitowaning. This was possibly a Dame School (where, for a small fee, basic grammar, spelling and arithmetic were taught) although there might be some confusion with her sister Eliza and son Edward who were both teachers.
Hannah died not long after her husband, John, on 26th April 1904 in Manitowaning. Her death certificate states “57, born England; ill 2 months;
cause of death : 'Marasmus from Irippis(?), said to be failing popurine week, death rather sudden”. He grandson, Frank, said the cause of death was
Quinsy i.e. suppurative tonsillitis. The stated age of death suggests a birth year of 1847. Hannah was buried with her husband in the Hughson Cemetery, Manitowaning – “gone, but not forgotten” – very true.
