Biography

Joseph Hite was born in 1731 in Perkiomen, Chester Co, Pennsylvania & was the son of Jost Hite & Anna Maria Merckle.

He married Elizabeth McKay.

He died in Feb 1757 in Winchester, Frederick Co, Virginia.

Joseph Hite's widow and Jacob Hite were appointed by the Justices Court to administer on the estate of Joseph Hite "now recently deceased."

Research Notes

When Joseph married his wife, was her maiden surname McKAY or was she a young VanMETER widow ?

Joseph was born abt 1731 in Virginia. [2][3]

  • He was the 8th and last child in his family. His parents were:[4]
    • His father was 'Baron' Hans Jost Hite ( Heydt), who was a wealthy nobleman of Alsace, Germany, before fleeign to Holland, and to New York in 1710 on his own ship the brigantine Swift and the schooner Friendship, reaching Kingston, New York in 1710. He brought sixteen families of German and Dutch. In 1716, they went South to the Pastorious Colony at Germantown, Pennsylvania. He later moved to Shenandoah, Virginia in 1731. He died 1760 and is buried at Bunker Hill Church, the First Episcopal Church built west of the Blue Ridge in 1740.
    • His mother was his father's 1st wife Anna Maria Du Bois, whom he married in Holland. She died 1738. Her father of Louis Du Bois, a French Huguenot, who was b 1626 and died 1695, one of the Founders of New Paltz.

Joseph married Elizabeth [3] Mckay.[5] Elizabeth went to Kentucky after her husband's death.

They had the following children: [3]

  2. John, b 1754, trusteee of Shepherdstown, 1796
  3. William, b 1756, d 1828 Kentucky
  4. Ann, b 1757, d 1821 Ohio, m Thomas Cartmel, d 1808 Frederick County, Virginia

Joseph died 1757 in Federick County, Virginia. [3]
