Research Note on Ruth Hoar's Birth: A Problem

There seems to be no documentation for Ruth Hoar's birth in Brimfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts on 17 Oct 1756, or in 1746, as has apparently been suggested. There was a Ruth Hoar born in Brimfield on 17 Oct 1766, but she was the daughter of Joseph Hoar (according to the records of the First Congregational Church he was Joseph Hoar, Jr.) and Mary Hitchcock.[1] Joseph and Mary had married on 3 Dec 1763, in Brimfield.[2] This Ruth Hoar (b. 1766) cannot, however, be the Ruth Hoar who married William Whippie in 1771, not only because of her age (truly a major problem), but also because she seems to have married Asa Pattrick on 1 Mar 1787, in Brimfield.[3]

Pending resolution of this problem of her birth, her date and place of birth have both been marked "uncertain."
