Biography

Charles Hobbs, Carpenter and Joiner, was the son of Charles Hobbs, Papermaker.

Charles Hobbs married in 1831 at Thatchum, Berkshire to Sarah Robinson. Ten years later Charles and his family left England from Gravesend on the ship 'Birman' October 13, 1841 arriving some 4 1/2 months later in Wellington March 1, 1842. They had 3 children travelling with them, George 7, one unknown and Domingo an infant.

The family made the voyage in steerage and Charles occupation was listed as carpenter.

In 1835, Charles had sailed with Major Baker with the British Legion under General Evans to assist Queen Christina of Spain against Don Carlos.

By 1838, Charles and Major Baker returned to England and became interested in the schemes of the NZ Company.

Charles made the decision to take his family to New Zealand. He remained in Wellington for 3 years then took up 100 acres at Khandallah just out of the city. Being a builder, he was soon engaged in work on the building of soldiers barracks at Wanganui.

When Charles Hobbs died he was just 38 years old. He is buried at Putiki Mission, Wanganui.

Sudden Death. — Mr. Charles Hobbs, formerly of the Porirua-road, carpenter, was found dead in his bed on the morning of the 8th July last, at Wanganui, where he had gone in the employment of Government. We are sorry to learn he has left a widow and five young children in Wellington totally unprovided for. [1]

Charles sailed to NZ with two children, George (5) & Domingo (1). He left eldest son (Charles Price Hobbs) behind in London as he was apprenticed to a trade and could not leave.
The family born in New Zealand were Christopher Robin, Alfred, & Clara.

Date of death in Newspaper article is 8th Jul. The BDM registered date of death is 14th Jul.
