Notations on Vincent Hobbs/Mary Hannah Shelby:
“ 338. Vincent HOBBS Sr.89 was born about 1720 in Dorchester, England.89 He immigrated in 1735 to Port of Dover, DE.89 He married Mary Hannah SHELBY who is referred to as "Hannah" on most legal documents. She is believed to have been a niece of Evan SHELBY, Sr., who died in Maryland before the rest of the SHELBY family moved to Southwest Virginia. Vincent HOBBS remained in Maryland until about 1769 when he and his son-in-law, John BENHAM, went to Holston region of Southwest Virginia. John BENHAM built a fort there. BENHAM made a settlement in Turkey Cove in Lee County about 1780, but Abingdon people claim he and his wife are buried in an marked grave near Abingdon. Vincent HOBBS was born about 1720 and died after 1808. The last known record for Vincent and wife appeared in a Court of Quarters Sessions hearing for Lee County on the 26 day of May 1808. It ordered that the overseers of the poor receive Vincent HOBBS and his wife on their list and provide for them according to the law. It is not known exactly when or where they died. They are believed to have been buried along the Powell River, two miles below DeBusk Mill near Dryden, Virginia. Vincent HOBBS married about 1742 in Maryland. When his son, Job, applied for his war pension in Arkansas, he stated his father was Vincent and his mother Ruth (nee THOMAS) HOBBS. Therefore, Vincent must have had two marriages. He moved in 1765 to Holston Valley, VA. 90 He served in the military on 4 Oct 1774. 9 0 He moved in 1780 to Turkey Cove, VA. • Catherine (Coffman) Wilkes reports: "I have come across some documentation that his parents are: James Hobbs (1669-1731) and Margaret (Veale) Hobbs (1673-??)

"Marriage of James Hobbs and Margaret Veale: 17 March 1697, at Bideford, Devon, England

Catherine Wilkes continues: "James Hobbs, his wife Margaret Veale Hobbs, and their three minor sons: William, Abraham “Veale”, and Vincent Hobbs immigrated to America. It is documented through Maryland Land Grants and Deeds that James came earlier, about 1727-1728. Margaret and their sons William, Abraham, and Vincent followed in 1731. The family originally settled and purchased land in Maryland. James Hobbs died in 1731. Through Probate records, His widow Margeret was appointed a guardian, John Hobbs Sr, to legislate on her behalf."[7]

Given the absence of profile manager disagreement or response, I have replaced disproven parents Nathaniel Hobbs and Maria Randel with correct parents per bio, James Hobbs and Margaret Veale.

A note about Vincent's wives: We know he had at least two: Mary Shelby and Ruth Thomas.

First, the biography section refers only to Vincent and Mary throughout. But Job was born in 1759 to Ruth. So anything Vincent did after his marriage to Ruth should be talking about "Vincent and Ruth," not "Vincent and Mary."

Second, with legal records also referring to his wife as "Hannah," and no primary records I am seeing that gives Mary Shelby a middle name (or Vincent, for that matter), there's a case to be made that he had a third wife. His biography should at least discuss this possibility.

First. No, we don't know if he had two wifes. "We" don't know because there is no documentation. Second, If you have seen or have access to

"legal records also referring to his wife as "Hannah," and primary records that "gives Mary Shelby a middle name" please share.

Respectfully, I believe we do know that. No, we don't have photographed primary sources, but the bio refers to a family Bible, "legal records," and a statement by Vincent's son, Job. I am simply asking questions from what is given here in this profile.

The family Bible says he married a Mary Shelby. The RootsWeb extract (referencing named family sources) refers to legal documents which name his wife "Hannah." (No, I don't have these or know what they are. I assume they are land records since that is mainly what others have in this time and location.) And his son, Job, stated unequivocally in that same extract that his mother was a Ruth Thomas.

Now, maybe Mary Shelby's middle name was Hannah. But there is no referenced source that gives her a middle name, and it would have been very unusual at the time. And we do know, if that extract is accurate, that Vincent had at least two wives, and possibly three if Hannah is a different woman than Mary. It was not at all unusual for a man to have two or three wives, considering how many died young in childbirth.

Considering the lack of sources, I think it is worth at least considering this possibility and discussing it on their profiles. I am only asking for an acknowledgement of the extraordinary uncertainty in this family. It's allegedly my direct line, so I'm more than a little interested in getting it as well sorted as we can.

And does anyone have a copy of the original page from the family Bible that was allegedly transcribed to prove the marriage of Vincent, born 1720 and Mary, born 1725, then their daughter, Rebecca, to William Blanton in 1745? Because as it's written, Rebecca marries when her father is 25, her mother is 20, and she is at most 3. That has to be a mistake.

edit: Okay, looking at the actual transcription, it has Rebecca born 1745 and married 1770. That needs to be corrected here.

Also, the link in the bio doesn't work. The transcription is here: http://image.lva.virginia.gov/BibleII/22676b.pdf

edit: I went ahead and orrected it.

I added the LVA link. I found the record. The one the only. The link worked when I added it because I always checked my source citations before I save edits. And, no it was not "allegedly" transcribed to prove the marriage of Vincent and Mary, lol. It was "legitimately" copied by the Daughters of the American Revolution for their records. Also I have a hard time believing the the Library of Virginia would publish "mistakes."

Thank you for adding the original link. Unfortunately, they do sometimes break. These things are always a work in progress.

And respected institutions do make mistakes, so I think it was a fair question, especially considering the inconsistency I first noted before tracking down a working link with the correct text.

First paragraph of research notes I added. "Vincent Hobbs born about 1720 - Mary Shelby born about 1725 married 1742. Transcribed from the family bible of William Blanton. William Blanton married Rebecca Hobbs in 1745." Last entry is verbatim. Please point out the inconsistencies you noted. If you are talking about inconsistencies between William's bible entry and the undocumented unsourced stories about who Vincents wifes were. A bible entry is about as legit as we can get. Vincent is my ancestor too https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1Name=Jones-102730&person2Name=Bradley-4416

My changes are logged on July 6, 2021. The differences are clear, and I noted the confusing part at the time in the first comment in this thread. You paraphrased the Bible notation in your research notes, instead of quoting it, and made it sound like Rebecca married William Blanton when she was three. Obviously she did not. They did not marry in 1745. That is not what the transcription says.

And no, that has nothing to do with the entirely separate issue of Vincent's later wives. But that is why I am still asking if anyone has ever seen the actual Bible itself, because a transcription in a group of papers, even if that group of papers is held by a respected university, is still not a primary source. I would like to know if the Bible still exists and if there is anything else in it that would shed more light on this family.

As for the link, it had extra periods in the following ellipsis, entirely unnecessary, which I believe is likely what caused it to not function properly. You can also see that in the change log.

posted by Ashley Jones JD
Also, the stories about Vincent's wives are neither undocumented nor unsourced. The Bible you cited is the source for Mary Shelby. Job Hobbs' pension application, linked on his profile, is the source for Ruth Thomas.

Hannah is the only questionable one, and depends on whether or not Mary had a middle name. I have seen no evidence that she did, and it would be unlikely, so I am hypothesizing that he -may- have had a third wife, -if- we could determine what the legal documents are that this profile refers to where his wife is named Hannah.

It's been a year since I was heavily researching the Hobbs and Blanton families, so I'm not sure where it was, but I believe there is a family history website where someone did find and analyze those land records. By that time, this family was giving me too much of a headache though, and I had to take a break. But I am 99% certain those documents do exist. We just don't know whether Mary and Hannah are the same woman or not.

Ideally, I would love to get mtdna analysis for female line descendants. Then we could determine once and for all how many wives Vincent had. Until then, there's no point in anyone acting certain about it. We just don't know.

Hi again. Considering the research notes on the much better sourced potential parents, James and Margaret Veale, should Nathaniel and Maria be detached? There's enough here that they should at least be marked uncertain.
posted by Ashley Jones JD
There are two linked daughters named "Hannah Rebecca," born 1745 and married to Blantons. According to this profile, there is no such woman as "Hannah Rebecca Hobbs." There is Rebecca, born 1745 and married to William Blanton, and Hannah, born 1751 and probably married to another Blanton. This needs to be straightened out. The whole Blanton line is confused with this.

Hobbs-144 and Hobbs-6682 appear to represent the same person because: Another duplicate. It's very important when creating a new profile that you check the drop down menu carefully to make sure a profile hasn't already been created for that person. Sometimes there may be a slight difference in spelling and or years or other date, but it is the same person. Those details can be worked out as explained in several parts of the help index and Wikitree g2g. It is Wikitree policy that there is only one profile for each person on Wikitree. This prevents having multiple managers for the same profile and saves the time spent proposing, completing and cleaning the endless multiple duplicates.
